Helpful tips for at-home printing:
Each printer is different. Before beginning any large printing project, you may want to complete a few tests:
- Test your printer’s results printing on metallic papers. The ink from some printers can smear and vary in color on metallic paper.
- Test how your printer handles text and cover weight paper. Some printers have a hard time loading heavier cover-weight paper. You can usually substitute text weight for cover weight if it doesn’t work with your printer, but there may be pieces of your invitation that require cover weight paper (RSVP postcards).
- Test your printer’s ink color on the paper you’re printing on. The appearance of ink may vary on different colors and weights of paper.
Printing templates:
For extra help with printing, browse our downloadable printing templates.
Computer requirements:
Our templates have been created using Microsoft Word. You will need Word 97 or a higher version to successfully use the templates. Helpful hints and how-to guides for working with Microsoft Word can be found at http://office.microsoft.com.
Using the templates:
Using our templates saves you the time and hassle of setting up your document yourself. All you need to do is download the desired template and save it to your computer. Once ready, open the template in Microsoft Word.
To re-write the text on the template, simply delete the text shown and type in your information instead. For added personalization, you may also use any fonts or text colors you wish!
(Please note: We would suggest you delete a line at a time and fill in the appropriate text. If you delete all of the text at the same time, you might have a harder time making sure your text fits in the appropriate space without spilling over. If you add extra lines of text or spaces between lines than what we have set up, the printing may not line up correctly.)
Fonts:
There is a selection of fonts already built into Microsoft Word. However, if you’d like to use a different font than one already pre-loaded into your program, there are a multitude of free font sites available on the Internet. Just use any Internet search engine (Google, Yahoo, etc.) and search for free fonts—the search engine will give you tons of options to choose from. Simply go to the site, download the desired font, and install it on your computer. (Many sites include directions on how to download fonts if you have questions.)
Here are some ideas:
Printing:
Our templates are designed to be used with most inkjet or laser printers. Before printing directly on your project, be sure to do a test by using a plain sheet of paper cut to the size of your project. If alignment issues occur, you may be able to slightly adjust your margins for better results.
If you are using a specialty paper such as vellum, you may need to adjust your printer settings to ensure proper print quality. For vellum, use the “transparency” setting for your printer. (For instructions on how to change your printer settings, consult your owner’s manual or software manual.) Keep in mind that printed vellum takes some time to dry—be sure to lay out the printed pieces on a flat surface and allow plenty of time to dry (the longer, the better!) before you handle them.
It may be helpful, especially in the case of vellum, heavier-weight cardstock, and metallic papers to manually feed the paper into your printer. This way the paper has a straight path into the printer and doesn’t need to be bent trying to fit through your printer’s normal path. It is also recommended you do this when printing on envelopes, as they may cause paper jams if you send them through the printer the normal way. Most printers have a back trap door that allows you to do this. (Again, consult your owner’s manual for the specific instructions for your printer.)
In the case of circle or scalloped cards, it may be helpful to temporarily adhere the card to another piece of paper. Cut a piece of paper into a square, with the width exactly matching the diameter (width) of your circle (or other shape). Use temporary adhesive to attach the card to the piece of paper and then run it through your printer.
