My daughter is starting to collect postcards. She's 8 and I'm a newbie scrapbooker so could you give me some hints or ideas on how to start putting her postcards into a book using scrap-booking techniques?

There are a couple options for scrapbooking postcards. The first is to use an album pocket pages. The We R Memory Keepers system is great and has all sorts of different pocket page styles. They have pages that fit only 4" x 6" photos (or postcards). There are other styles that fit other sized pieces. You could also use the standard 12" x 12" pages to display the postcards. Use a piece of cardstock or patterned paper as the background and then adhere the postcards. If you don't want to actually adhere the postcards, photo corners keep things in place without adding adhesive! Stop by your local Archiver's and they'll be more than happy to help you find the right products for you!
